The story of Real Steel takes place sometime in the future (on earth) where robots have taken the place of human boxers. A fighting promoter is trying to succeed in the sport, placing his bets on an old robot with the help of his 11 year-old son who suddenly appeared in his life. I liked the whole use of technology concept. Still controlled by humans with no AI embedded yet, or at all.
And i'm talking about actors and robots working on filming on the same set! You got to thank Concept Overdrive for this great movie (the same company that developed the real time motion systems used on 'Avatar. Overdive uses the "Simul-cam" process which combines computer graphics robots with real world actors and sets. So that gave the director of this film, Shawn Levy, the experience of shooting the whole scene live. The film's real-world hydraulic robots were created by Legacy Effects, who utilized an Overdrive system to perform animatronic robots. The result was simply amazing.
Hugh Jackman is a great actor and he proves it once again. Strong, convincing, sensitive performance. The key character here though is 12 year-old Dakota Goyo. Some of you might remember him from his recent small part in 'Thor' where he played young Thor. Very talented. Also, Evangeline Lilly is gorgeous in her supporting role.
Now, who's responsible for the music? Danny Elfman of course, amongst other artists. Hip-hop is the main sound and it delivers the sport's atmosphere quite right. The scenes are mostly indoors and industrial but the exterior ones carry some really nice photography.
I really enjoyed it. It was live, intense and sweet. It's worth the watch if you're an action/ sci-fi -or even sports- fan.

My wife talked me into watching it and I was very surprised to enjoy it so much. I think they could have developed the story with Charlie's son a little more but from what I understand they are planning a sequel and maybe they will build on it more then. I think they could have ended the movie with them deciding to stay together or something along those lines instead of stopping abruptly after the final fight. I still give the movie a solid 8 out of 10. I am looking forward to the sequel and think they can do so much more with the idea behind this film and hope they develop it well on the next one.
